Taking Care of Costumes

There’s nothing else quite like a dance costume – It carries the excitement of the performance yet to come, and of course, there are all those sparkles! For many children, wearing a costume brings out the confidence and poise they’ve been working so hard on in class, and it is one of their most favorite parts about dancing on stage.

Because dance costumes are made from specially fabrics, they can’t be treated like regular cloths. From Stretchy lycra-blended leotards to the embellishments of sequins and beading, costumes are made from finicky materials. For this reason, DO NOT WAS YOUR COSTUME!

Taking care of your child’s costume can be simple if you keep these Dos and Don’t in mind

Do encourage your dancer to find a safe place at home to keep their costume. Help them understand that this will keep it in Tip-Top shape for photos and performance time.

Don’t allow playtime in the costume. If something spills on it or it rips, it is too late to purchase a new one! As our costumes are Rentals damaged costumes are charged $150 replacement fee.

Don’t allow your child to eat messy foods or drink anything but water when wearing the costume for photos or the performance. This helps prevent irreversible damage that can be caused by the dyes and enzymes in food and drink.

Do keep tutus upside down on the hanger, unless otherwise specified by your child’s teacher. This helps keep the tutu fluffy!

Do purchase a nude leotard undergarment for you child if they complain the costume is itchy. These undergarments can be worn at all times for comfort and modesty.

If the costume is wrinkled. Do all it to “rest” outside of the garment bag. Using a steamer is OK too if you are experienced with one. You may also hang your costume in the bathroom during a shower. The steam from the shower will help the costume “rest”

Don’t forget that costume are rentals and will not be an exact fit. Small alterations such as tacking straps or hemming pants may be needed to ensure the fit is right. Please do not make any permit alterations (this will result in a $150 replacement fee).

Do make sure the costume is ready to go when needed! Make sure it is not crumpled or missing anything, and bring it with you in a garment bag. If possible, please wear your costume to picture day and recital.

If you ever have a question about the best way to store or care for a specific dance costume please ask! We understand the costume care can feel like completely new territory, so we’re happy to help anytime.

Recital Hair and Makeup Guide

Does my dancer need to wear makeup for Picture Day and the Recital?

Yes! The lights on the stage are very bright, and the Theater is large! All dancers will need to wear makeup for the show. This will make their beautiful faces stand out on stage and not be washed out by the lights.

For the younger dancers, we suggest light blush to match their skin, light brown eyeshadow and red lips. Competitive dancers should wear their competitive makeup. All dancers should look their best for the big day!

How do I style my dancer’s hair for Picture Day and the Recital?

For uniformity, all dancers are required to wear a low Ballet Bun no Sock Buns. This includes Hip Hop Dancers Boys should have their hair neat and tidy.

Hair should be as neat and clean as possible. This is a special day, so you should make a special effort to help your dancer look their best! Use gel / clips/ hairspray to smooth fly-aways so that all dancers have a classy and uniform look on stage! Bangs should be pulled back.
